Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain 1-Day Tour

Explore the Multicolor Palccoyo Mountain from Cusco

Cusco is one of the best destinations in Peru, and it has the three Rainbow Mountains in the high Andes. Palccoyo is the fantastic choice for those looking for multi-colored landscapes, an easy hike, less altitude, and fewer crowds than the classic Vinicunca. Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is the right choice.

Palccoyo offers a profound, meditative stillness that allows the landscape to speak. As you pivot, the view expands to include the jagged, obsidian spires of the Stone Forest and the colossal, snow-capped mass of Ausangate looming on the horizon.

Highlights of Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain

  • Natural Palccoyo Mountain: Discover the second Rainbow Mountain in Cusco and be amazed by the vibrant colors.
  • Stone Forest: Walk through the stone forest and get a stunning view.
  • Cultural Immersion: Engage with local Quechua communities and learn about their traditions.
  • Stunning Landscapes: Enjoy the breathtaking Andean landscapes, snowy peaks, colorful mountains, and herds of alpacas.

Detailed Itinerary

For this Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain tour, you will wake up early in the morning around 4:00 to 4:30am from your hotel. Then, we drive to Cusipata town, where we stop for breakfast in our restaurant. We continue our drive for another 1.20 hours to reach the trailhead where our hike will start towards the iconic Palccoyo Mountain.

Starting at an impressive 4,700 meters, this journey is less of a grueling trek and more of a majestic walk into the sky. Within just 30 minutes of a gentle, gradual ascent, the horizon transforms, revealing a world that feels light-years away from civilization. The trail itself is a vibrant immersion into Andean life; you’ll walk alongside local Quechua people in their brilliant traditional textiles, while herds of alpacas and llamas graze against the backdrop of the rugged peaks.

As you reach the summit at 4,900 meters, the payoff is nothing short of legendary. You aren’t just looking at one peak; you are standing in the center of a 360-degree panoramic masterpiece, surrounded by three distinct Rainbow Mountains. The swirling ribbons of turquoise, gold, and maroon wrap around the landscape in every direction, offering a visual spectacle that few places on Earth can rival. It is a rare moment where the effort is minimal, but the reward is a life-changing encounter with the raw, colorful heart of the Andes.

After, you will have the option to hike up to the stone forest, which offers more panoramic views. Then, we make our way back to the bus and drive to the restaurant. Have lunch. Finally, we drive back to Cusco.
