My Experience Discovering Pallay Punchu
As a local photographer, I had many chances to explore this multicolored mountain. I took a tour from Cusco; the local tour operator collected us from our hotel. After we drove for about 2 hours to Cusipata town, where we stopped for breakfast. Then, we drove another hour to reach the trailhead, which is at 4,520 meters; from there, we had the first impression of Pallay Punchu mountain in the distance.
The views of Pallay Punchu
The surrounding views are insane: towering red peaks, green valleys, and some herds of alpacas. This is totally different than the other Rainbow Mountains. We started climbing for about 30 minutes to reach the first stop, where the colors started showing up, and I was ready with my camera to capture each angle. The sharp shape contains three or four colors, which is visible; at a distance you can also observe other mountains with similar colors, and the views are stunning.

We decided to hike farther to have better views; as you climb higher, you will be able to have better views. The mountains turned more dramatic, and the colors green, red, and yellow are vibrant, and these come from different minerals formed in millions of years.

After having explored the mountain, we hiked down and boarded our transportation to return to Cusipata, where we got lunch. Finally, we drove to Cusco.
Best time to visit
The best time to discover Pallay Punchu is during the dry season (May to October), when skies are clear and the trail is safe for hiking. During these months, the colors of the mountain stand out vividly under the bright Andean sun.
The rainy season (November to April) brings heavy showers and muddy trails, making the hike more difficult. However, this season also enhances the greenery of the surrounding landscapes, offering a different but equally beautiful perspective.
Preparing the altitude
Since Pallay Punchu is located at a high altitude, proper acclimatization is essential. Spending at least 2–3 days in Cusco before attempting the hike will help minimize the risk of altitude sickness. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, and nausea.
Tips for acclimatization:
- Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.
- Eat light meals.
- Drink coca tea or chew coca leaves, a traditional remedy.
- Walk slowly and rest when needed.
